They consist of genetic material (either DNA or RNA) enclosed in a protein coat called a capsid. Some viruses also have an outer envelope made of lipids. Viruses are not considered living organisms because they cannot reproduce on their own. They need to infect a host cell and use the host's cellular machinery to replicate. Bacteria, on the other hand, are single-celled microorganisms that have a more complex structure. They have a cell wall, cell membrane, and genetic material (DNA) contained within a nucleus. Bacteria can reproduce on their own through binary fission, where one cell divides into two identical cells. Bacteria can also exchange genetic material through a process called conjugation, allowing for genetic diversity and adaptation. In terms of their effect on humans, both viruses and bacteria can cause diseases. However, antibiotics are effective against bacteria but not against viruses. Antibiotics work by targeting specific structures or processes in bacteria that are not present in viruses. Viral infections are typically treated with antiviral medications that target specific steps in the viral replication cycle.
